Frustrating Experience with Poor Communication and Overcharging

I would not recommend using Ashfords LLP, especially if you’re assigned solicitor Ria Hattam. My initial dealings with James Hemsley were excellent—he was professional, efficient, and his advice was spot on. However, when my case was handed over to Ria, the quality of service dropped dramatically. Despite clear instructions not to escalate matters, Ria pursued actions I explicitly advised against, which led to unnecessary costs. To make matters worse, her advice contradicted what I had previously been told, causing even more confusion. The scope of work was expanded without my agreement or any clear communication, and the final invoice far exceeded the original estimate.

Ultimately, I had to settle the payment simply because the entire experience was too stressful to keep fighting. My offer to compromise on fees was ignored until much later, adding to the frustration. It was clear that Ria had little regard for the financial or emotional toll her handling of the case caused. I felt overcharged and misled, and the lack of accountability throughout the process was disappointing. If you're considering Ashfords LLP, proceed with caution—while James Hemsley was great, my experience with Ria Hattam was awful, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through the same ordeal.

Would not recommend

Ashfords have been extremely unprofessional while acting for the estate of my late father. I have been continuously ignored over the last 3 years of them acting and i would seriously not recommend. After multiple emails and phone calls to Victoria E, I still have not heard back, and she seems to miraculously be busy every single time i call no matter the day or time

Awful

The most unprofessional solicitors ever. As others have said their service is appalling. They don't communicate. Their work is poor. I am amazed they are still in business.

Public Guardian and Court of Protection

I had a serious issue with the Public Guardian and Court of Protection. Ashfords LLP were absolutely 1st class in assisting me and resolving my issue. They were empathetic, knowledgable and very prompt in responding to me. They listened to and understood the challenge I had, and provided the advice and strategy needed to reach agreement with the Public Guardian and close my case. I am very grateful for the way Ashfords represented me and would highly recommend them to prospective clients.

equity release

Dealt with Diana Muntford in regards to lifetime mortgage equity release. Most solicitors do not understand it and confuse it with a simple release of equity but they provided a very clear pathway through the complex procedure . I see they have had some bad reviews but my experience was the opposite. From start to finish I felt guided and taken care of and any questions were dealt with promptly and sympathetically. I would use them again and highly recommend them as they are the leaders in this confusing area. Best to deal with Exeter office directly .
