Beware Hidden costs.

Instructed Wards to defend against a money claim.
Estimated costs were increased multiple times. After clearing our account and paying in full we told solicitor we have no more money to spend.
After acknowledging we have no more to spend Solicitor offered to send a short offer email to the claimants solicitors. Shortly after we received an £1100 invoice for sending 10 emails!

I was told if we make a formal complaint about this costs could increase as the chargeable amount would be assessed by management.

Would have been better off dealing directly with the claimant myself.
Would never use Wards again.

Avoid

Despite having dealings with these solicitors for three years they let me down probably because legal aid had run out.
Was not able to ask questions despite having to jump through hoops for the other side.
Despite being ill with depression and chest infection no compassion given.
I was due to complete on divorce and now I have no legal representation.
Avoid at all costs especially Ms Jones

So if you despise your relatives then this really is the firm for you

So if you despise your relatives then this really is the firm for you. They will make life as miserable as possible for them while you laugh from beyond the grave. Now you obvisouly don't despise them enough to not provide for them you just want to make it as miserable as possible for them for a few years. So if you really do want to make it horrid for them I can not recommend these solicitors enough. If however you love your relatives then all I can suggest is you look elsewhere.

Shockingly poor, untrustworthy and vengeful

I was embroiled in a financial dispute with my ex ’partner and I was told the Wards would be the most suitable to assist. After an initial consultation, I was given an estimate of costs and informed that they would not conduct WiP (work in progress) before my pre-payment. I lodged £2,000 funds and received a T's & C's Contract and only a few worthless window dressing eMails from them but no invoices. I was then informed that professional work had stopped through lack of fees but they sent nothing that I could verify. I called into their Office in person to lodge more funds and was told they charged between 3% and 5% for Credit Cards use which I knew to have been outlawed some years earlier. Rather stupidly, I then accepted a quote of £3,000 for one session with their appointed Barrister only to be actually charged £7,000.00 +VAT. After a month or so of poor or no contact to my correspondence from Wards, I attended an extremely poorly conducted meeting and at the end, I called time on the whole debacle. I was especially annoyed that rather than take my instruction my Solicitor had pre-arranged a 'cosy-up' agreement with the other side. The Solicitor said to have been acting for me, wrote a deplorable letter to me accusing me of ‘walking out on them’ and offered to close my Account for a fee of £800.00 and not the £1,700.00 she claimed I actually owed. As I had by their arrangement, a ‘float’ of £2,000.00 for WiP I, evidently quite wrongly, assumed that I was to have around £1,200 refunded. How odious could they possibly get? Well, they later invoiced me saying that they had made an ‘errors’ in their Accounts Department, I actually owed them a further £2,000.00 and that they were now intending to charge the £1,700.00 too. I spoke with the Solicitor handling my case and after some ‘horse trading’ she agreed simply to close my account on that day with no fees one way or the other. A year later, Wards reopened their case and took me to Court for non-payment of their fees plus interest. My Solicitor by then had left Wards employment. Wards produced what I would claim to be ‘creative accounts’ for work that I had not ever been invoiced for, I suggest therefore that Wards are probably more criminal than some of their clients may be. I now have a CCJ against me from the very people that I instructed for support. That stinks.

Avoid Bradley Stoke

Avoid the brunch in Bradley Stoke. Rude service, I was literally welcomed on the phone with 'oh, it's you', zero customer service skilles. They messed up our forms to withdraw from ISA account TWICE! and when I asked what happened and how is that possible, they said it was 'human error' ! I understand errors, but lack of support, lack of sense of urgency I do not! Due to their mistake we were close to not being able to complete purchase of our house.
We have complained to their office, who checked the files and send an email back to say that they cannot uphold complain but as 'good will gesture' they offered us discount on the fee. If you value your well being, money and time DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

Destroys children's lives

Mrs Underhill is unprofessional during the hearing. She asks non-relevant questions and takes words out of your mouth. Even when you give her the opposite factual evidence, she twists it. Leaves parts out if the bundle on purpose to 'make her case'. She kept on giving looks and nods to the judge. And once that is over, she adds things into the court order that were not discussed in the court hearing, nor what the judge recommended. Because of that she is destroying children's lives.

With hindsight it was a big mistake to instruct Wards Solicitors

Buying a new build for the first time is a daunting experience. The developers encouraged us to instruct Wards at 8 Fountain Court, New Leaze, Bradley Stoke. With hindsight it was a big mistake to do so. When we were alerted to issues with the plot AFTER exchange of contracts we had no help whatsoever from our solicitor. Despite our requests to view the plot before exchange of contracts, access had been denied. We had to fight our own battle with the developer and in the event we alone managed to get the contract rescinded. Our deposit was returned in full after a lengthy delay from the developers accounts department. We have used several solicitors over the years to purchase & sell our many homes and have never had a situation where we had to fight our own battle with no support from our solicitor. The solicitor appeared to be on the side of the developer at all times. We are satisfied with the outcome we alone achieved despite no support from this solicitor.

Fine... not great...

My overall impression of Wards is that they are fine, but no better than that. I was really hoping for them to be great and frankly they weren't. We bought a house using Wards, and to be entirely fair to them all of the legal aspects for handled properly and on time. Enquiries made were responded to quickly and phone calls were generally returned and often quite quickly, but sometimes not returned at all. This brings me to the thing that disappointed me about Wards - customer contact. Having worked in service roles for law firms including a previous and recent law firm of the year, I can safely say I know what good service and good customer contact looks like. There were plenty of opportunities during all parts of the process to contact me either by email or by phone to keep me updated on the latest. Wards took none of them. I'm not asking for much, a 30 second one line email is all. But sadly I was kept up-to-date on what was happening by my sellers solicitors rather than my own. Having informed the conveyancer that post was extremely slow Wards still insisted on sending a large amount of items by post rather than by email, none of which needed to be by physical post. I found this practice inexplicable and archaic. The cherry on top is that we completed our purchase yesterday and I didn't even have any contact from my conveyancer whatsoever on the day of completion. One of the most important transactions of my life and my own conveyancer didn't even give me a phone call. I was hoping that in 2021 solicitors with this kind of reputation for being out of contact and leaving customers guessing was something relegated largely to the past and perhaps the occasional comedy routine. I was wrong.

Geoff Goulding is the worst solicitor.

Geoff Goulding and Wards Solicitors made the entire process of buying and selling excruciating. They were unresponsive to calls and emails, and would ask receptionists to lie to us in order to avoid giving updates on the process.

Goulding was unprofessional and lazy. It would take weeks to get a piece of paper signed.

Buying and selling a house is already stressful enough, don't let them make it worse for you. Look for a more competent solicitor.
