My mother wrote her will with this company. Afterwards she asked me to review it and see if everything looked in order. I noticed that this company was written in the will to be executors of the estate. I spoke with my mother, she didn't understand that they would charge a lot of money to do this. Also, she had asked to give money to cancer research, they had advised her that 15% would be a good amount. My mother had no idea how much 15% of her estate would be (a lot more than she wanted to leave for charity).
I called Jane Pleass to make an appointment to take my mum in to make these changes to her will. It took me over a week of emailing and calling and leaving messages to finally speak to her. When I did, she said that she wasn't willing to make any changes to my mother's will. I explained that it hadn't been explained to my mother the details and costs involved in them being executor of her estate nor the monetary value of 15% of her estate for cancer (she had a friend / witness with her when she did the will who said this had not been explained to her). Ms Pleass said she still would not make changes to the will as obviously I had coerced my own mother. A very rude and untrue statement. I am my mother's only child and beneficiary and so she had every right to show me the will and discuss it with me. Needless to say, my mother had to go to a new solicitor's to make a new will, where we discovered that if you give money to charities in a will through a solicitor, the solicitor gets a kick-back from it (hence the reason Pleass were encouraging my mother to give a large amount to charity). I felt terrible that my mother had been misled and scammed in this manner, I also fear for other elderly unaware citizens in this area making their wills. Luckily this came to light while my mother was alive as I cannot imagine having to deal with such a company if they had become executor of her estate after she died.
