My interest in law and in particular criminal law began at University. Criminal Law was a subject I enjoyed immensely and it ultimately ignited my passion for the subject. The State has many powers, powers which must be exercised appropriately and not abused. The idea of being able to hold the State and its organisations to account when potential abuses occur along with my personal strong sense of justice made the decision to become a criminal defence lawyer an easy one. Originally called to the Bar at Lincolns Inn in 1998, I completed the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test to become a solicitor. Born and bred in London, I gained experience at a specialist criminal practice in North London. I remained in practice in London for 16 years representing clients at some of the busiest police stations, Magistrates Courts and Crown Courts in the country. Protecting the rights of individuals is a fundamental right and one that underpins everything I do for my clients. I am measured in my approach, put clients at ease during difficult times and explain things in plain English. I am a persuasive and tenacious advocate not afraid of making strong representations when advancing the case for my clients at the police station or in court. I have worked with leading barristers and gained invaluable experience dealing with the some of the most complicated, technical cases and clients. I continue to have strong and established links with barristers and their Chambers nationwide but particularly in London and Yorkshire. I am currently a duty solicitor and a higher court advocate. I am passionate about training future lawyers. I have been a mentor to law students at the University of Derby for over 10 years and have previously taught Advanced Criminal Litigation on the Legal Practice Course at Nottingham Law School. I have featured in the Legal 500. Previously I have held positions on the Criminal Practitioners Group (Law Society) and the Ethnic Minority Lawyers Division (Law Society). I have been a former committee member for the Society of Asian Lawyers, a school governor and a member of the Valuation Tribunal of England and Wales. I speak Punjabi and conversational Urdu.

Clear and reassuring advice and very effective representation
When I met Matt Hague following my daughter's arrest he gave such clear and reassuring advice, as he set out the next steps and explained all possible eventualities. By following his advice, the best possible outcome was reached through Restorative Justice.
It was without hesitation that I contacted Shah Hague Solicitors again, when the need arose. Matt responded promptly to my communication and again, gave very clear guidance. He took quick action to secure legal aid and apply for an adjournment. Zawar Shah very effectively made representations to the prosecution that it was not in the public interest to take the matter further forward. The prosecutor agreed. Thanks to Shah Hague Solicitors my daughter is now able to focus positively on her future, having just started at University. I am very grateful to them both.

Speedy case handling!
Mr Zawar Hussain Shah was really helpful in getting my case dropped and handled it in the most professional way possible. Just to let you know, it took him 20 minutes to get my case dropped, so if you need someone that handles your case with speed, I reccommend Mr Shah.
