Philippa Pearson
Solicitor - Partner
SRA ID: 140391
I joined Lanyon Bowdler as partner in May 2020 and am based at the Hereford office. I am highly experienced in family law including both divorce and the separation of cohabiting couples, especially in mid-high net worth cases. I deal largely with financial matters involving pensions, business assets and landed estates, and have a particular interest in the competing claims of third parties and other beneficial interests which often arise in farming cases, which is an area in which I specialise. I am a member of Resolution and subscribes to their code of conduct, and therefore seeks to find solutions to the issues that often arise out of family breakdown in as amicable and constructive a manner as possible. I have been qualified since 1988 and was a partner in London until 2004 when I escaped to the Welsh Marches with my husband to be near the family (who are Welsh and West Midlands based) and to raise my own family (two teenage girls and accompanying adults). I am a highly-respected voice in family law and have written a number of legal books, including the Lawpack’s DIY Separation and Divorce Guide. I used to be a regular voice on BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show and can now often be heard on Sunshine Radio. I love singing and performing (but not in the court room) and am involved with HPA Fest each year organising poetry and drama for the children of the county.

Trust of Land Act matter
This was a trust of land matter following a breach of an agreement with a previous partner. I was impressed with the forensic approach to identifying, securing, assessing and presenting evidence over the two years that it took to finally resolve the issue. I was able to have several one to one consultations to discuss and catalogue evidence and throughout the process I was reassured that my case was worthy and with a high likelihood of success if it proceeded to a court hearing. I have no doubt that if the evidence was lacking then I would have been told at the earliest, as it was, at each stage, I was able to review and make decisions based on sound knowledgeable advice and experience. Due to technical issues with the case, Philippa referred me to another experienced lawyer who undertook the final aspects of the case which included a mediation process. I was concerned that a handover would require repetition of work but this proved not to be. Philippa's thorough and considered initial work enabled her successor (Claire Yardley) to pick up the reins seamlessly and effectively reach a satisfactory conclusion. Throughout, I felt that both Philippa and Claire were taking a personal interest and cared about the outcome and impact on myself of what was an exceptional experience for me but daily business for them.

Excellent support, advice and execution of very difficult proceedings.
Support, advice and execution of my instructions in long drawn out divorce proceedings that were complicated by the other side being determined to avoid making any financial settlement after a marriage lasting 40 years. I was able to have a high level of involvement in what was a complex case which helped reduce my legal costs. All the staff with whom I had contact were helpful and supportive during this very difficult period which included Covid lockdown. Philippa Pearson provided a huge amount of emotional and legal support throughout the eight and a half years it took to get to the Final Hearing, grasping the complexities of the case and understanding the mindset of the other side, both the legal team and my spouse. She was always ready to encourage and support me when I was feeling overwhelmed by the total intransigence and often outrageous behaviour of the other side, reinforcing my belief in the justice of my position, which was borne out by the Judge's comments at the final hearing.

The most helpful support to establish a divorce based on kindness
My first call with Philippa Pearson, recommended to me via friends, set my mind at rest and gave clarity to an awful predicament; I knew that the time had come to end a 20+ year marriage, but I wanted to do so in a kind and collaborative way. Philippa's advice meant that we didn't need mediation or the courts to agree our Separation Agreement and, since then, the process off application through the courts for divorce has seemed striaghtforward and unstressed. This is in no small part due to good, fair, reasonable advice, recognised by both my former wife and I.
