My family have been clients of Hallett & Co for 80 years. One of their former staff members made an honest mistake and charged us the incorrect stamp duty. 5 years on, HMRC noticed this mistake and charged us the balance and an £8000 fine. We duly paid the balance and expected Hallett to take responsibility for the mistake and pay the fine. They are entitled to claim for mistakes on their insurance. This matter has been going back and forth for over a year and the lack of action and support from Hallett has been worse than shocking. Having agreed to pass this to their insurance company, they have now back tracked and asked us to take legal advice from else where.
