Trainee Solicitor at Duncan Lewis Solicitors Ltd

Isobel Beaumont

Trainee Solicitor

I joined Duncan Lewis in November 2022 as a Caseworker in the Child Care team based at the City of London office and I am training as a solicitor via the SQE route. I assist Alia Lewis, Director, and I am part of a specialist Autism and ADHD team within the Child Care department. I previously worked at Creighton and Partners as a Child Care and Family Paralegal where alongside supporting a director, I represented clients at PLO meetings and in an adoption matter. My experience is predominantly in Care Proceedings and Rule 16.4 matters, assisting with representing children through their Children's Guardian or representing parents who are respondents in applications brought by a Local Authority. During my postgraduate degree, I received a commendation for a research project on the law around Section 20 of the Children Act 1989. I am a member of Young Legal Aid Lawyers and Justice.

A legal professional who truly cares

5

I debated whether to write a “professional” review or to share what I truly felt. In the end, I decided to stay true to myself because I want others to read an authentic reflection of my experience.

Bella, I will never know how to thank you enough. For context, I am a late-diagnosed autistic woman, and I have a disabled son who is also autistic with complex needs.

The family courts are a harrowing experience for anyone, but for an autistic family, they can be particularly frightening, confusing, and deeply distressing. Throughout the process, I often felt misunderstood in ways that were incredibly painful.

If it hadn’t been for Bella’s patience, understanding, and unwavering support during the most traumatic and stressful period of my life, I don’t think I would have made it through the proceedings at all. Bella was incredible at tailoring adjustments to meet my needs, all while never making me feel like a burden or a difficult client (though I’m certain I must have been, given how my body and mind responded to what we were put through!).

She maintained the utmost professionalism while also showing remarkable empathy and humanity—qualities that many professionals lose sight of when they become detached or overly clinical. Bella never forgot that this wasn’t just a case to me—it was my life. That compassion, combined with her expertise, is so rare to find in the legal field, especially after years of working with multiple legal professionals over the eight years we were in court.

What truly set Bella apart was her commitment to doing what was right, not just striving to “be right.” As an autistic person, my sense of justice governs my life, and finding someone who shared those values made me feel safe and valued, not just like another client. Bella’s work quite literally saved mine and my son’s life in ways I will never forget.

I also want to thank Duncan Lewis for building a team that aims genuinely understand neurodivergence. Bella is a huge asset to your firm, and any family would be incredibly fortunate to have her on their side.

Bella, you have left an indelible mark on our lives, and I will never forget what you did for us. Thank you so much.
