Mike Evans
Solicitor - Partner
SRA ID: 142782
As the Partner who heads up the Personal and Critical Injury Team, I represent people who have suffered permanent and life-changing injuries (such as brain injury) and families whose loved ones have been killed in accidents. The consequences of road traffic accidents or accidents at work (often in agriculture or the construction industry) can be long lasting and emotionally and financially devastating. My role is to help at a time in my clients’ lives when they and their families have been through what can be a life changing experience. My aim is to recover the maximum possible compensation for my client’s injuries or illness; however, I am dedicated to ensuring that my clients receive the care they need quickly, not at the end of what can often be a lengthy compensation case. Having access to comprehensive and high quality rehabilitation promotes independence and can make all of the difference to people getting back on their feet as quickly as possible. I always aim to secure interim payments where required to help my clients pay for adapted accommodation and establish rehabilitation packages, care and case management. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the number of clients who choose to stay in touch with me after their case ends. I feel this is a reflection of the service and support I was able to provide during the course of the case and the close relationship subsequently built between us. I genuinely enjoy seeing how my clients’ lives have developed and improved. I am a member of the Law Society’s Personal Injury Panel and Secretary of the Headway group in Ceredigion – a local charity for people with brain injuries. I am native of West Wales and a Welsh speaker. This means I have been able to conduct many cases through the medium of Welsh to accommodate my clients’ specific requirements. Below are some details of cases I have settled over recent years where life changing, sometimes multi-million pound, settlements have been achieved following accidents at work or road traffic accidents. Brain Injury: a young man fell from height at work suffering head injury, brain injury and partial paralysis. I was able to put a comprehensive rehabilitation regime into place early on and have temporary adaptations to his family home undertaken meaning he was able to return home following a lengthy stay in hospital. Subsequently a purpose built house was constructed with his specific needs in mind and his case was eventually settled for over £6 million. Brain Injury: An infant suffered a severe injury following a motor vehicle accident. As part of his claim we put into place an extensive lifelong rehabilitation package and ensured an adapted new build home was built with his long term needs in mind. Settlement of the case was in excess of £14 million. Accident at Work: fatal injuries were suffered in an accident involving agricultural machinery. I represented the family at the inquest into the death and eventually secured a financial settlement for his family. Acting for infant child who lost both parents in a road traffic collision. Initially I represented the family at a two week jury inquest into the collision. A settlement was subsequently achieved giving financial security to the child’s grandparents and, eventually, to the child. Spinal Cord Injury: A young claimant suffered paraplegia in a road traffic collision. I was able to put a full rehabilitation package in place for the remainder of his lifetime and get a disability adapted home built with his future needs in mind. Severe Leg Injury: my client suffered a crush injury to lower leg in accident at work. Specialist surgery was undertaken privately and paid for by the Defendant insurers as part of the claim. A £500,000 settlement was achieved for this client. I am also Deputy District Judge sitting in several jurisdictions in South Wales. Whilst sitting as a Judge is a very different “hat” to wear from being a Solicitor, it does give me considerable insight into how Courts work, how cases are progressed, and progressed well, and I believe that my judicial experience compliments my ability to represent claimants in serious injury cases. Away from the office I am an enthusiastic sportsman, having played rugby and cricket at competitive level, and continue to play team golf and squash. I also enjoy cycling, sailing and skiing.
